A FORGOTTEN KINGDOM (A PELICAN BOOK)
by Sir Leonard Woolley
published by Penguin, 1953
LIMITED TO ONE COPY ONLY, CONDITION 6/10
Sir Leonard Woolley, the famous archaeologist whose work at Ur of the Chaldees between the two wars uncovered so many wonders of Mesopotamian civilization, began in 1935 an excavation in the Turkish Hatay near Antioch, in the hope of tracing further the relations between Greek civilization and that of the ancient East.
This book, whose appearance as a Pelican marks its first publication in any form, tells the story of his results. It records seven seasons of excavation of two mounds, al Mina and Atchana, the latter representing a town, Alalakh. The author's discoveries regarding the history and development of these places throw new and exciting light, not only on the great pre-classical empires of Sumer, Babylon, and Egypt, but on the art of Minoan Crete, the Bronze Age culture of Cyprus, and the trade and economics of Greece in the heyday of the Athenian Empire.
