Michael followed the other boys. John took out his keys and opened the door in the wall.
Inside the door was darkness. Then Michael began to see, and to hear. He heard water moving. He saw light on the water, and light under the water. In the water was an empty barge, tar black in the dim light.
'This is Pig,' said John. 'It's written on one end of it. Do you swear to help us to sail it to Holland? Emigrate?'
'I do,' said Michael.
'And leave everything and everyone behind?' said John.
'I do,' said Michael. And he had sworn away not only his brother, but the rest of his family and everything that he knew.
