Which talent would you most like to have?
What is your most treasured possession?
If the house were on fire and I were to take one thing with me, it’d be my cat Mischa. But if I’m being sentimental, it’s a bunch of postcards—because not a lot of people write them anymore in the 2010s, and in 2020, who can send one?
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I think being happy is perfect enough—whether it’s from achieving a goal, sharing a pleasant moment with someone, or doing something you love on your own.
What is your motto?
Lately I find myself saying, “Rest is a moral obligation.”
How would you like to die?
Peacefully in my sleep when I’m in my 80s or 90s.
If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what would it be?
A bird—probably a crane, if cranes aren’t extinct by then. I just love how stately and peaceful they look, even when they have to fend off another animal.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Any virtue exercised at the wrong time. Especially shyness and filial piety.
What is your current state of mind?
Trying to take things a day at a time but still thinking about tomorrow.
