#SGLITFTW EDITION: An Artist's Reading List — Jamie Teo

Posted on February 19 2017

Hi Jamie! Tell us more about yourself.
Hello. I’m an arts manager and aspiring embroidery artist. I am most interested in heritage. I find myself researching quite a lot on ways to sustain the past in the present. Fun fact, I have a weird obsession with tape—washi tape, electrical tape, and all kinds of tape. I have boxes of tape at home. What do I do with them? Nothing. I just love the look of tape.

In five years, I see myself on the coast of somewhere in California. I really miss the country as it somehow felt like a second home to me the last time I was there. As for the near future, I hope to further my studies in conservation, architecture or art and design.

What are you currently reading?
I'm reading The Complete Works of Kuo Pao Kun, Volume 4.

Can you recommend us your best five titles to us?

Between Stations – Boey Kim Cheng
The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye – Sonny Liew
The Complete Works of Kuo Pao Kun
Tender Delirium – Tania De Rozario
Caterwaul – Jennifer Anne Champion

And why?
I find myself re-reading Between Stations every year. I completed The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye in one sitting although it really drained me out, as a lot of brainpower is needed to consume visual literature. That being said, I couldn’t seem to put down the book. I had entered this whole new world of graphic novel, something I’ve never dwelled on before reading this.

No explanation is needed to read the third book on the list. Everyone should read Kuo Pao Kun. I really loved Tender Delirium and Caterwaul—that’s the thing about poetry, it allows you to read substantially even while on the run.

SingLit always brings about the question of what does it mean to be Singaporean. In trying to find that answer, I get to remind myself of my own identity. That’s why I like these books—they are stories I can relate to.

What’s one quote you live by?
杀掉文化就是杀掉自己 (to kill culture is to kill oneself)
