HORIZON IS CALLING
by Tarro Yashima
published by Henry Hold & Co.
LIMITED TO ONE COPY ONLY, CONDITION 5/10
This is an autobiographical book telling in pictures more than words, the story of a young Japanese resistance painter and his family. It carries on the story begun in The New Sun, Yashima's first volume, which was published during the war.
Horizon is Calling begins in the winter of 1935, when for the first time all the family were out of jail. In his pictures, Yashima managed to convey the slow awareness of people coming back to life after a long confinement. There is spontaneity and a true, deep joy in these pictures. He decided to paint a still life, fruits and vegetables, and the sudden awareness that he could heap a table with these things was so turbulent a wonder that he brought great piles of stuff together and painted with abandon. He did a self-portrait, and it was his first one with a smile. He played with his growing son, Mako. All these awakening interests of a man who is inally free to live a normal life with his wife and child are told with poignant effectiveness in pictures, which explain what words cannot.
Each painting is accompanied by text in both English and Japanese.
