Love, sacrifice, devotion, heroism and... lycanthropia? Four classic tales retold with drama and style plus an original story of the same high caliber. The traditional characters--Bellerophon and Pegasus, Tam Lin, Alcestis, and Aucassin and Nicolette--are expanded here, anticipating the questions of a modern reader yet avoiding anachronisms or elaborate exposition (unlike most juvenile historical fiction). The fifth story, "The Horn of Healing," incorporates several familiar themes into a nevertheless distinctive situation: the king needs the powder of a unicorn horn as an antidote to a sword wound inflicted by a band of outlaws called "wolfsheads" (thus lycanthropia--the king's unorthodox diagnosis). Three brothers search, individually, for the healing substance and one marries the inevitably available princess, but it is not a routine construction.
