It is often said that "the Japanese genius touches perfection in small things." A positive proof of this statement is found in the exquisite workmanship so frequently discernable in netsuke.
Briefly, the netsuke is a sort of ornamental carved button used, in former days, to attached the tobacco-pouch, the medicine-pouch, the purse, etc., to the belt or sash. Though used for such a practical purpose, netsuke were artistically made and often proved very ornamental to the wearer.
Mr. Yuzuru Okada of the National Museum of Tokyo, whose familiarity with the Japanese fine arts is widely recognised, has given here many interesting facts arbout the netsuke – their history, classification, uses, their designs and making, notes on netsuke artists and even some secrets on the appreciation of netsuke.
